Special Olympics Volunteering – Paddle Board Event

On Saturday, July 8th, 3 members of the CBWC (Beverly Arrington, Pam Johnson, Sue Ann Petrie) braved the elements of the hot, humid day and assisted the Orange County Apopka Club in assembling 120 boxed lunches and distributing them to the hungry Special Olympics Paddle boarders, Coaches, and Volunteers.

Afterwards, the left over boxed lunches of ham or turkey sandwiches were passed out to maintenance workers and other individuals in order not to have a surplus on our hands.

Paddle boarding is a relatively new sport for Special Olympics but has seen extraordinary growth over the past few years.

The Athletes compete at this sport, (a mix between Kayaking and Surfing) at all levels and it is much tougher than it looks.

We talked with a few of the athletes after the completion and a 61 year-old woman stood out as she told us how she navigated the open waters and took her balancing act from the board to the top of the podium.
